Explain why there is no largest possible value of cosecant.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get why there is no largest possible value of tan... but why cosecant?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

cscx = 1/sinx Hmm let's think about this a second. What is the smallest value that sinx can have? Because that would correspond to the LARGEST value that cscx can have. If you put a smaller and smaller number in the denominator, it get's really really big.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah i just realized that cosecant is near 180 like tan is near 90

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Ah yes ^^ does that crazy think like tangent, just in a different spot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there a significant to this? Why is tan near 90 and cosecant near 180?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Ummm, tangent has a cosine in it's denominator. So tangent blows up where cosine is undefined (cosine approaching 0 at 90degrees) Cosecant has a sine in the denominator. So cosecant blows up to infinity where the sine function is undefined (sin x approaches 0 at 0 and 180 degrees :D)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks a ton I appreciate your time and help.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

:D
