~organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane. ~Lysosomes are membranous sacs of enzymes. ~made by the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex. ~Lysosomes contain various hydrolytic enzymes that are capable of digesting nucleic acid, polysaccharides, fats, and proteins. ~They are active in recycling the cell's organic material and in intracellular digestion of macromolecules. ~lysosomes are involved in programmed cell death.
