-(15+5/2a)+12=17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-15 + 5/2 a + 12 = 17 Combine like terms. -12 -12 ----------------------- -27 + 5/2a = 17 Add 27 to both sides. +27 +27 ---------------------- 5/2a = 44 Now divide by the fraction. I got 17.6. Let me know if you need that in a fraction form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fraction form pls teacher doesnt want decimals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is 17 6/10 Hope this helped!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a bunch ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

peachy do u have a different answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't agree with sue101. -15 -5/2a +12 = 17 Combine like terms: -3 -5/2a =17 Add 3 to both sides -5/2a =20 Multiply both sides by 2a -5 =40a Multiply both sides by 1/40 -5/40 =a Reduce fraction -1/8 =a a =-1/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after i started looking at how she solved it , i thought it was odd too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, she started by adding -24 to only one side of the equation, which wouldn't balance it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i saw that also and she didnt make 5/2 a negative either

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you plug -1/8 in for a you can see that your equation balances. Try plugging it in and see how you do.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why -1/8 and not just -8? after multiplying each side by two wouldnt that just be -5a=40?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's how it should look: -(15 + 5/2a) + 12 = 17 Distribute the "-" and drop the parentheses: -15 -5/2a + 12 = 17 Now I'll plug in the -1/8 for "a" \[-15 + \frac{ 5 }{ 2(\frac{ 1 }{ 8 })}+12=17\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then, you need to do this: \[-15+\frac{ 5 }{ \frac{ 1 }{ 4 } }+12=17\] Don't forget to invert the 1/4 , and multiply it by 5 to get your answer.

thanks for the help , its still kinda fuzzy to understand but I will keep practicing .
