OpenStudy (cenaida):

According to this property, 5a + a = 5a + 1a. A.associative property of addition B.multiplicative identity C.distributive property D.additive identity HELP!!!

OpenStudy (cenaida):

please help.. :(

mathslover (mathslover):

what you have thought so far?

OpenStudy (cenaida):

i think its associative but im not sure..

mathslover (mathslover):

why associative property?

OpenStudy (cenaida):

because it switches numbers.. i think.. if not then it could be additive identity.. i dont know :( im so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure if this is correct. I remmber when I learnt fields we were allowed to substract a varaible from both sides of the equation. I don't know if you are allowed to do it here but if you can do it then you get: 0 = 0. Please let me know if I'm on the right course or should I try other way to answer it.

OpenStudy (cenaida):

what property do you think it is then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well it would be pretty risky to select D but all others seems useless here. Let me open my notebook and I'll check if It raises something.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still here, just a second.

OpenStudy (cenaida):

ok thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay found it/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's not my answer but I managed to find this in the internet : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091105151238AAFMsXY He argues : multiplicative propety of 1 (also called indentity prop. of 1) It sounds right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it help you?

OpenStudy (cenaida):

yes but it doesnt say if its multiplicative identity or additive identity.. and those are the only two answers with "identity" in them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its the multiplicative identity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait one more second and I'll try to convice you.

mathslover (mathslover):

See it IS multiplicative identity as : there is written a as \(\color{blue}{1a}\) and multiplicative identity says : 1 * (any no.) = the no. itself or a = 1a or 1a=a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh mathlover already answered you. well if you need more stuff I sent you a link.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and a convincing quoting : " so the only question is "why is a=1a ?" and the answer is because 1a=a1=a that is the identity property of 1 under multiplication "

by @satellite73

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's B.

OpenStudy (cenaida):

ok thanks you guys!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. Glad to help you.
