Choose the equation of the line passing through the point (-4, -2) and perpendicular to y = -x + 6. y = -x + 6 y = x - 6 y = -x - 2 y = x + 2
what do you know about a perpendicular slope?
Not Much ..
Can Somebody Help Me ?
When lines are perpendicular, their slopes multiply to equal -1. Another way of saying this is to say that if you know the slope of line A, then the slope of perpendicular line B is the negative inverse of the slope of line A. So, for example, if line A has slope 2, then line B has slope -(1/2), and if you multiply the two slopes, you get -1.
In your problem, first find the slope of the line they gave you. Then find the negative inverse of that slope... that will be the slope of your perpendicular line. Knowing that much may narrow down your possible answers. Next step is to remember that if the perpendicular line goes through the point (-4,-2), then you have to be able to substitute those x and y values into the equation and have it still work. Only one of the lines in the multiple choice will have the correct slope AND have (-4,-2) as point on the line.
