Divide by using long division (x^2+5x-28) /(x-3)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

its just like normal division |dw:1350085330562:dw| multiply the division by x... what do you get?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

oops multiply the divisor by x... what do you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk :/

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so you have \[x(x - 3) = ?\] what is the expansion...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x^2-3x?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

thats great so it works like this |dw:1350085544399:dw| does that make sense..?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

but there is still a little bit more to do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No i've never learned this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is it x+8 - 4/x-3?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

bring down the + 28 and multiply the division by 8 |dw:1350085714351:dw| so the quotient is (x + 8) and the remainder is 52/(x - 3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you write it out because that's not one of my choices?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well it may be like the left hand side... and I just saw a typo in my calculations it should be -28 and not + 28 in the original question. (x - 3)(x+8) - 4 = x^2 + 5x - 28

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the alternative is (x +8) - 4

Ok thank you.
