A chemist burns a serving of peanuts in a calorimeter and sees that 150,000 J of energy is released. What should the information on the nutritional label say? (1 Calorie = 1,000 calories; 1 calorie = 4.186 J) A. 35.8 calories B. 35.8 Calories C. 3,580 Calories D. 3,580 J ***i think it is 35.8, but idk the difference between Calories and calories... please explain??? and show how to get to it?? I'm not too sure... thank youuu!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuz i did this.. 15000 J/ 4.186 J =35833.73 x 1000= 35.833731 which equals about 35.8 ??? did i do that right?? but idk the difference b/w Calories (with a capital C) and calories (with a lower case c) ???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

1000 calories = 1 Calorie (or 1 kilo calorie)...yeah i know, it's confusing

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

why they can't just stick with kilo calorie, we'll never know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so do we go by calories?? Or kilo calories??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do europe and all the other countries use kilo calories??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well if you say "1 kilo calorie", then you're also saying "1 Calorie" (with a capital C)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so a normal person should only consume like 2 kilo calories, or 2000 calories?? according to nutrition facts and stuff?? (well i think i consume way more than 2000 calories, but oh well haha...)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can just exercise (which i do!!) to burn it off or whatever hahaa :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

2000 Calories, yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yeah like I said, the notation is very confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh okay :) thanks :) so is the US the only country that uses calories??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hmm probably, wouldn't be surprised lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay haha :) sooooo how do i solve this problem tho?? was i right tho?? was it 35.8 ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if so, idk if its Calories or calories :/

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you should have this 15000 J/ 4.186 J =35833.73 then you divide (not multiply) by 1000 to get 35.8 Calories

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

35833.73 calories = 35.8 Calories

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh so my answer is B. 35.8 Calories ??? ooh and yeah divide hahaa not multiply lol :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay thank you :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

rule is little c calories are smaller (cause of the small c) so there are more of them in the same amount of big C calories

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh okay haha thanks :) and thanks for clarifying the whole Calorie and calorie thingy :)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
