OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2m + 13 = 2m - 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

should we start with the m's ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

combine like terms 4m = 16 m = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

giving an answer is not going to help her learn.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I helped her do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait is it -4m ? when you combine it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2m+ 2m = 4m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 + 3 = 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know but its -2m...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 4m = 16 divide by 4 m = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we have \[-2m + 13 = 2m - 3\] now let's get rid of the -2m on the left hand side. how would we do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make a guess :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we add 2m ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can do -2m -2m = -4m -3 - 13 = -16 -4m = -16 m = 4 it will still give you the same answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes you can add 2m over and get 4m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got it! add 2m to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then -3 or add the 13 over either way you get the same thing...-16 or 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[(−2m+2m)+13=(2m+2m)−3\] now what would that give us?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you understand how to combine like terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i get it now. thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would give you 4 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's correct...but why 4? \[(−2m+2m)+13=(2m+2m)−3\] what's the intermediate step? what do we have on the left hand side and the right hand side when we add 2m? write it for me 13=?
