I suspect what you saw was a delay in MathJax, which while unfortunate... let's be honest - you're not exactly using it for its intended purpose :P

Ah, so OpenStudy uses a template system called Knockout. We write all our templates with placeholder content and then when information is provided from the server the placeholder content is "kocked-out" and the real content is substituted. What you saw is a side effect of part of the system thinking content is ready to be displayed (our half) before the rest of the system has generated the content (MathJax).
