how does adding fractions work?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to have the same common denominator. So if it's 3/4 + 2/3 you have to have the same denominator. So the least common denominator of 4 and 3 is 12. So next you multiply the first fraction to get 12 as the denominator, remember when you are multiplying a fraction you have to multiply the top and bottom. So you multiply the first fraction by 3 and you get 9/12. You do the exact same thing to the next fraction but you multiply by 4 because you want the denominator to be 12, so you get 8/12. Now that you have a common denominator you can add them together, but you only add the numerator so you get 17/12 which is simplified to 1 5/12.
