MIT 6.189 A Gentle Introduction to Programming Using Python (OCW) 15 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey all... Just checking to see how everyone is doing on the Week 1 assignments for the Mechanical MOOC - A Gentle Introduction to Python

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Done. No issues besides some codecademy nits.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Great! Good to hear.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

All except the video lecture. HW was fun!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've done all week 1 except read HTTLACS which I have installed on kindle and am going to read today

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Doing fine, nearly finished everything...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So far, so good...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Enjoyed it all. Codecademy had a couple of issues, solved with a bit of persistence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Excellent! Keep on keepin' on!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Still working on it, and doing fine so far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Finished week one now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm done as well, as of 5 minutes ago ;-). The only thing that I really stumbled upon was the str(pi) exercise at codecademy. Only after a night's sleep did I see that I had a typo in my value of pi, boy oh boy, did I feel stupid ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I’ll be a bit late, probably have to finish it on my smartphone while riding a train …work and all that :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jhmroes: great rule of thumb: when confused, sleep on it!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hook: no rigid schedule here-- do what you can when you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, Mookie, I’l try my best ☺

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MOOC-E Mookie, there is one question that’s been popping up — since there is no central brain to evaluate our assignments, what should we do with them? Just discuss them within our groups or are there any better suggestions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hook If you're really sure you understand the concept, our suggestion is that you just save them on your laptop for later reference. If you are struggling, need help, want a critique of the code--post here or share with your group.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I've done the reading in HTTLACS and the 2 Codecademy units. Hopefully gonna get to the MIT course stuff tonight or tomorrow. Going very smoothly so far.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am currently dappling with which Python environment to download and install and what all things I need to make that work. Should be fine. Content-wise, everything is breezy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Finished the lectures, readings, exercises. Now reviewing the CodeAcademy units and finding that all the problems with CodeAcademy are still there, unresolved. I thought that CodeAcademy was going to get fixed when the class started. Nope. Still have to fight with the softtware to get the green progress bar to disappear. Sometimes can reload the page till blue in the face and that darned progress bar won't go away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Screech Definitely let the Codecademy team know via the Q & A forum on the first exercise.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MOOC-E Cheers, Mookie. I get it now and am happily spreading the knowledge.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Been through nearly all the materials for week 1 and done most of the tasks. I think i'll have to revise some long forgotten math! (I did struggle with that a little!) I did have some probs with codecademy and the 'loading bar/interpreter not running the code' . (I've done quite a bit on there this year, with very few issues...)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@petew71 There will be some trig and you may want to review the quadratic equation for later on. Khan Academy ( http://www.khanacademy.org) is a good place for a quick review.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://www.khanacademy.org

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Screech @MOOC-E re: the green bar on Codecademy, I had a lot of trouble with this while using Internet Explorer, but I switched to Chrome and have not had any trouble since.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm doing fine! Thanks for this project!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Managed to finish it all during the weekend on the train. So far so good and all’s peachy (I’d rather we learned Python 3, but I understand the reasons).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Started Week2 today. After help from MOOC-E IDLE & Python 2.6 are working on Ubuntu Pangolin. Thanks!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2d optional exercise for Week 2 (the shifted code) is proving difficult. The instruction regarding the use of modulus is unclear. There are easy ways to do the shift, of course, but somehow I can't get the algorithm right with %
