While a man is walking on a rough surface, why is the direction of friction along the direction of motion?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you walk? You push the ground with your feet on the direction opposite of motion. If you're on ice you then slide backwards. On a rough surfrace friction avoids your feet sliding because it cancels with your own force. So friction force direction is opposite to the force that your feet does, so it is on the same direction of your motion (and it's why you're able to move!) Excuse my poor english.

OpenStudy (jahnavi):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let think the question this way, when somebody is walking his foot apply pressure backword (think). And of course friction acts opposite to the direction of motion of the foot, not the body itself. the body moves forward due to the composite effect of the frictional force and the muscular force we apply against ground. Hope it would help you. thanks.
