if one angle of a right triangle is 37 degrees 39' 36'' what are the values of the other two angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know i have to subtract something but don't know what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A right triangle has one angle that is 90 degrees... that's what makes it a right triangle. So that's the easy one of the two :) The total of the angles in any triangle is 180. So, since the one right angle is 90, the other two must add to equal the other 90 degrees. The problem gives you 37 degrees, 39 minutes, and 36 seconds. So you have to subtract that from 90 degrees, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds. It's a little like subtracting time... there are 60 seconds per minute and 60 minutes per degree.

is it 52.34

OpenStudy (anonymous):

90 0 0 - 37 39 36 --------------- 52 20 24 First, you have to "borrow" in the right column... it's 60 - 36 = 24 seconds, but that leaves you only 59 instead of "0" in the middle column, and you have to borrow it all the way from the left column, leaving 89 degrees there. It would be similar to subtracting time... subtract 7 hours, 39 minutes, 36 seconds from 10 hours... you would first have to think of 10 hours as 9 hours 59 minutes and 60 seconds. Then you could subtract each unit to get 2 hours, 20 minutes, 24 seconds.

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a bit of a pain, isn't it... :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i forgot to convert it to dms lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i see now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i do the sam e for the next one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, now you know all three angles... one is given, you just found one by subtracting, and the third must be 90 degrees since it's a right triangle. You're done :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay, thanks

glad to help :)
