#1 Which of the following is the correct scientific notation for 782,000 g? A. 7.82 x 10^5 g B. 7.82 x 10^–5 g C. 7.82 x 10^6 g D. 7.82 x 10^–6 g ***my answer: B. idk is that correct??? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#2: An object under a microscope has a diameter of 125 micrometers. What is its diameter in millimeters? A micrometer is one one-millionth, or 1.0 x 10^–6, of a meter. A. 1.25 x 10^–1 mm B. 1.25 x 10^–3 mm C. 1.25 x 10^–6 mm D. 1.25 x 10^–4 mm **idk this one tho :(

OpenStudy (aaronq):

for number 1, really inspect the answer.. is 10^5 = 10^-5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh oops, the answer to #1 is A. 10^5 right???

OpenStudy (aaronq):

for #2, 1 mm = 1.0 x 10^-3 m 1 micrometer = 1.0 x 10^-6 m

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yep #1 is A.. what do yo think would happen if you have a negative exponent instead?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for #1 u mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it's for #1, if its a negative exponent, it would be making the number larger, not smaller right??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@aaronq does that seem to answer the question?? so for #2 my answer is C???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10^-6???

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you were right about #1 it's A for #2 you're converting micrometers to millimeters, they're conversion factor is 1000 just as if you were converting from millimeters to meters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused still ;(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u pls explain a little more?? :D

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha sure maybe this will help: 1 mm = 0.001 m 1 micrometer = 0.001 mm 1 micrometer = 0.000001 m 1.0 x 10^-6 m = 1 micrometer 1.0 x ^10^-3 m = 1 mm do you see the relationships?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you're moving the decimal place 3 times from m to mm and mm to micrometers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i think so, so based off of that, my answer for #2 is this??? B. 1.25 x 10^–3 mm ???? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you think?? is B the answer for #2??? :D @aaronq ?? :D

OpenStudy (aaronq):

haha nooo, it's actually D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for #2, my answer is this?? D. 1.25 x 10^–4 mm

OpenStudy (aaronq):

125 micrometers divided by 1000 (to get it in mm) 0.125 mm if you move the decimal point to the left you're gonna have to subtract

OpenStudy (aaronq):

no wait it;s A!

OpenStudy (aaronq):

omg sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what?? please explain?? iheartfood confused :/

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you have 125 divided by 1000 you get 0.125 mm right?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

now every time you move the decimal point to the right you are going more negative in your exponent eg 2.0 = 20.0 x^10^-1 = 200.0 x 10^-2 = 2000.0 x 10^-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mhmm :) sooo...??? :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what does that mean then??

OpenStudy (aaronq):

so if you have 0.125 mm and you wanna write it like this 1.25 you just went right with the decimal point once so you have to write it 1.25x10^-1

OpenStudy (aaronq):

if you wanted to write it 12.5 .. you would have to write it like this 12.5 x10^-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh so my answer is A. 1.25 x 10^–1 mm 100% sure it is A???? :D

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yes, i'm 100% sure, i even checked with my calculator haha

OpenStudy (aaronq):

but do you understand why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i do haha based off of what u wrote lol i think i get it :) thanks!! :D
