Part 1: Provide a system of TWO equations in slope-intercept form, with only one solution. Using complete sentences, explain why this system has one solution. Part 2: Provide a system of TWO equations in slope-intercept form with no solutions. Using complete sentences, explain why this system has no solutions. Part 3: Provide a system of TWO equations in slope-intercept form with infinitely many solutions. Using complete sentences, explain why this system has infinitely many solutions.

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

are they linear equation? ie, in the form of y = mx + b ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i believe.

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

can you tell me what you think of if 2 equations have only 1 solution ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know. i honestly have no idea, it's not that i am lazy, i just don't know how to do it.

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

each equation is represented by a line, a solution to an equation is a set of (x,y) that satisfy that equation...do you get what i mean here ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no ;(

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

example...for equation x + y = 1 ....is the point (0,1) a solution to this line? or is the point (1,0) a solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x isnt it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry, i did not understand. it is 1,0 isnt it?

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

i don't get what you mean ...a solution to an equation means when you substitute both values of a point in for x and y, you have both side of the equation equal

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

do you get what i mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no....

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

in order to understand and get the answer to your question, you need to know the definition of a solution to a particular equation...each point on a line (graph of the equation) is a solution to that line.. tell me if you get this before i continue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, i don't know math at all. i just need an answer to my question :s

OpenStudy (tamtoan):

the purpose in here is to guide you through solving problems so you can understand and help you for your future problems :)
