one sec, i forgot where i uploaded the picture :/

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i put 120 as the answer. but now that i'm looking at it again, would it be 60?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is angle D supposed to be congruent to angle A?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not seeing this as fast as I'd like. How did you get either 120 or 60?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If triangle ABC is similar to triangle DBE, then the side AB with length of 10 corresponds to side BD with length 5. So it appears ABC is twice as big as DBE. If the area of ABC is 240, and the side lengths of DBE are only half of those in ABC, then the area of DBE will be 1/4 of the area of ABC, so 60.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yea, i'm thinking it's 60 now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is similar to a square... a square with sides 10 has area 100. If you have a square with sides half as long... 5 units each, the area is 25, or 1/4 of the area of the larger square.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

thanks :) next question!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't even think you needed to try to solve that segment DC... but you didn't solve it correctly anyway ;) it can't be 10 across the bottom and 10 on that top left side :)
