Solve the following system of equations using the graphing method.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=x-5 y=-2x+1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Slope: -2 y-int: 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And then hat do i do? D:

OpenStudy (tracyy):

I will assume you know how to use a graphing calculator. Put in those two equations then take a look at the graph. See where they touch each other? You will have to find what that coordinate is. To do this, press 2ND and TRACE. Go down to 5: Intersect. Press enter three times, and it will give you the coordinates at which those two lines intersect. It will say x=2 and that the answer to your equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

>.> Um... I can't use a calculator.

OpenStudy (tracyy):

Then in that case, graph the first equation, y=x-5. -5 is the y-intercept, which means place a point at y=-5. The slope is just a positive 1 so that just means go up one unit and go over to the right one unit, and place a dot. Connect the dots and that is your line for y=x-5. Graph the next one, y=-2x+1. This one has a y-intercept of 1. Place a dot at y=1. The slope, though, is -2, which can be put as -2/1. You will have to go down 2 units, and one unit to the right, then place a dot. Connect the dots and that is your second line. If you did this correctly, the two lines should intersect at the coordinate (2, -3).

I got -1,4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (tracyy):

|dw:1351122820642:dw| Your graph should look like this. Are you connecting your dots properly or using a ruler?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let me try again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh I see (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if the equations are y-2x=4 and 3y=6x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The y-2x=4 y change to y=2x+4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (tracyy):

That would mean solving it so that it is in y=mx+b form so yes, that is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aren't they parallel?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw wouldn't it y=2x-1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6/3 is 2

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

y=x-5 y=-2x+1 x-5 = -2x +1 Solve for x, this is the same as finding pt. of intersection on calulator

OpenStudy (anonymous):

><'' I can't use calculators...

OpenStudy (baldymcgee6):

I didn't tell you too use a calculator, I said, solve for x.

OpenStudy (tracyy):

Yes, it should be y=2x-1. Sorry about that!

OpenStudy (tracyy):

And yes, they are parallel. You can tell by the equation also. y=2x+4 and y=2x-1. The slopes are the same.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! Thank you.
