Solve using augmented matrix methods: 3x-y=-5 x+3y=5 So far I created the matrix: 3 -1 -5 1 3 5 Where do I go from here? I think I can switch rows 1 and 2 but I'm not sure what else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

{-1, 2}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry but what does that mean? I need help with solving it, not an answer per se

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have to do row operations. I would switch rows because that puts a 1 in the first diagonal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we want the number below that to be a zero.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 3 5 keep this row the same 3 -1 -5 add ( -3 times row 1 ) to row 2 1 3 5 0 -10 -20 divide by -10 to achieve a 1 in the lower right 1 3 5 0 1 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 3 5 add ( -3 times row 2 ) to row 1 0 1 2 1 0 -1 0 1 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you follow that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Crystal clear! Thanks so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup, basically once you achieved the correct zero going down, shift down a line and continue. once you get the lower right, go back up good luck
