OpenStudy (mathlegend):
2|x+7|-4=-1|x+7|+5
I know the answers are
x = -4
x = -10
How do I properly plug this back into the absolute value problem?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):
I had re-wrote the problem as.. 2(-4+7)-4 = -1(-10+7)+5
hartnn (hartnn):
hint : |-a|=a
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
Okay so I should write it as.. 2(4+7)-4 = -1(10+7)+5 ?
hartnn (hartnn):
|-4+7|= |-3| = ?
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
But when I plug in 'x' do I plug in both of them or just one for each 'x' in the equation?

OpenStudy (mathlegend):
2|-4+7|-4 = -1|-4+7|+5
hartnn (hartnn):
yes, so what is |-4+7|
do i t one by one
hartnn (hartnn):
plug just one for each 'x' in the equation
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
2|3|-4 = -1|3|+5
?
hartnn (hartnn):
yes, go ahead .

2-4?
-2|3|
?
-1 + 5 = -4
-4|3|
-2|3|=-4|3|
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
When do the absolute value signs disappear?
hartnn (hartnn):
|a|=a
|-a|=a
hartnn (hartnn):
-2|3|=-4|3|
-2(3)= -4(3)
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
-6 = -12
?
But they don't equal each other? Shouldn't they equal each other?

hartnn (hartnn):
then x=-4 is not the solution to this
hartnn (hartnn):
wait, it is
hartnn (hartnn):
2|x+7|-4=-1|x+7|+5
2(3)-4 = -(3)+5
2=2
hartnn (hartnn):
got that ^ ?
OpenStudy (mathlegend):
Yes thanks @hartnn
