Which two lines are parallel? I. 4y = 3x + 1 II. 4y = 3x – 1 III. 3y = 4x – 1 Please help explain how to do this and Ill give you a medal, thanks :)

hartnn (hartnn):

can u find slope of a line ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Step 1. Find the slope of each line.

OpenStudy (ksaimouli):

1 and 2 because same slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The slope is before the x, right?

OpenStudy (ksaimouli):

yup

@alexxxis the slope is the part before the x, but you have to be careful... you have to have solved for y first before you look at slope. If you have 4y = 3x + 2 and 3y = 3x + 4 These two lines are NOT parallel... the first one has slope 3/4, and the second has slope 3/3 = 1. You have to solve for, or isolate, the y in each equation by dividing through by whatever is in front of the y. THEN you can compare slopes. It doesn't change your answer on this problem, but be careful on future problems like this... that's the sort of trick they like to pull in multiple choice questions.
