|dw:1351793866873:dw| Look at the picture and think of it this way. for a function to work you need to be able to place a value (for example 'x') into the function and get a distinct value out (for example 'y'). To get more than one output from a function wouldn't make sense. Paraphrased, 'there should be distinct values for y for each x value'

The vertical line test is this: Slide a vertical line across a graph. If at any point there is more than one point touching that vertical line, the graph fails the vertical line test and is not a function. The graph is undetermined at that value of x
