TRUE or FALSE ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this statement TRUE or FALSE?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you have a graphing calculator?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not with me :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why do i need one?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

well you can do it by hand, but it'll take longer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u pls show me?? idk how to see if it is true or false...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The idea is this If 4 were an upper bound of the zeros, then all of the zeros would lie below 4 (ie 4 is like the ceiling of where the zeros can go...they can't go higher than 4)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

If you somehow found a zero that was above 4, then 4 would NOT be an upper bound because clearly 4 isn't a ceiling

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this statement is FALSE????

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i didn't say that

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It turns out that the zeros are 3/2, 5/2, -1 All of these values are below 4. So 4 is actually an upper bound IF we had the zero 10, then 4 would NOT be an upper bound

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait so it is TRUE???

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, it's actually true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b/c of what u said above right??

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :)
