5 < x – 2 < 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x>5 and x<13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can split this into x-2 > 5 and x-2 < 11 and solve separately

hero (hero):

No need to split anything. Just do this: 5 < x – 2 < 11 5 + 2 < x < 11 + 2 7 < x < 13

hero (hero):

Now we know that x is between 7 and 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that works, but it's sometimes hard to visualize with both the inequality signs in the equation, just nice to have it out for clarification

hero (hero):

It's also easy to see that x is between the two numbers you are solving for

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep both way works, just depends on how your brain operates

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks guys.

hero (hero):

What so difficult about adding 2 to all sides.

i just didn't really understand it completely. I'm not that great at math.
