Can you convert each pair to fractions with common denominators? That's another effective way.

You can look them over quickly to see if a fraction reduces to the other one. You can also eliminate some obviously wrong answers, e.g. if one fraction is an improper fraction and the other is a proper fraction, then they definitely can't be equal to each other.
