I need help solving an equation using the elimination method? The equation is a + 9b =1, a +4b = -4
ok line them up vertically and eliminate a because it's quicker os it becomes: a + 9b = 1 a +4b = -4
then you subtract to eliminate a and getting: 5b = 5
solving for b which you divide 5 on both sides to get b as 1. Then you substitute the value of b into one of the equations to get a. I think you can do that right? Tutors allow the student to solve the last step. Do you understand how to do the elimination method?
I am supposed to substitute the 1 for b and solve the first equation?
Yes you substitute 1 for b and it can be any of the 2 equations.
I got -8 for the answer for a. Is that correct?
Yes. it's correct! :]
Thank you so much for your help. I was not sure I was working this equation right. Have a great day.
You too and you're welcome :]
