The average distance from the Earth to the Moon is approximately 238,000 miles. How many miles did an astronaut travel if she went from the earth to the moon and back? Write the answer in scientific notation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answer would be 476,000 but i just dont know how to put it in scientific notation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

scientific notation has only a ones digit, plus some decimals if needed, all multiplied by a power of ten. So like 33 in scientific notation is 3.3 x 10^1... it's 3.3 multiplied by 10 = 33. 102 would be 1.02 x 10^2, since you have to multiply 1.02 by 100 to get 102. Do you see how it works?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, yeah so then it would be 4.76 x 10^5? or just 4.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.76 x 10^5 is correct... no reason to drop the "6" off the end.

oh ok thanks!

glad to help :)
