Create a set of data points such that the variance and standard deviation is one.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The data set 1, 2, 3 has a mean of 2 and a standard deviation (and variance) of 1 since 2 is at the very center and each data value is exactly 1 unit away from the center. You can alter this by adding any number you want to all 3 points (say add 15 to each number to get): 16, 17, 18 and the standard deviation (and variance) will not change because each value will still be 1 unit away from the mean.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can do this with any set of points where you have an odd number of them.

what about an even number such as 6 data points?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let me think for a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

I'm overthinking, you would basically have a distribution that is symmetric about a certain point and each side is 1 unit away from the mean. Ex: the set 8,8,8,10,10,10 fits this description because each point is exactly 1 unit away from the mean (9)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok yea that's what I was thinking but I thought that wasn't right, i guess becuase i wasnt thinking of the mean but their range which is 2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

i gotcha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok well thank you for your time(:
