You would use the pythagorean theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 a & b are the two sides right next to the right angle. And c is the side opposite from the right angle.. So in this case a or b is 7, c is 8, and we're solving for the final side. 7^2 + b^2 = 8^2 49 + b^2 = 64 b^2 = 64 - 49 b^2 = 15 \[b = \sqrt{15}\]
