Is there a symbol for "degree"? For example, the degree in a quadratic equation is 2. I'd like to express it in Mathematical terms that a function \(f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c\).
BTW, I need some other notation.
Before that, I need to know if there even exists a symbol for "polynomial". For example, I need to express it in some other terms that \(f(x) \text{ is a polynomial.}\)
ive often seen the notation for a polynomial as\[P_n(x)\] where n is the degree
So you always have to specify that \(n \) is the degree and \(P(x)\) is a polynomial? Hmm... is there a standard notation? Because I'm too lazy and it'd be hard to type stuff like that every time. Heh
in order to specify that a function is a polynomial; since not all functions are polys; and to what degree you want it expressed as; the notation (if ive rememberd it correctly) is as a posted.
Well, that's the answer I was looking for... at least. :)
page 101 has an example of its use :) http://books.google.com/books?id=qIJPxdwSqlcC&pg=PA99&dq=P(x)+polynomial+of+degree+n&hl=en&sa=X&ei=hhKdUKKJLoG88ATa-oGoBA&ved=0CDsQ6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=P(x)%20polynomial%20of%20degree%20n&f=false
thrm 3.4.1
\[\deg f(x)=2\]\[\deg P_n=n\]
