what is the altitude of a triangle?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

it's the line segment that goes from one vertex to the opposite side and this line segment is perpendicular to the opposite side

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Here's a triangle |dw:1352673499810:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and here is an altitude drawn in |dw:1352673536236:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if i have a triangle with a base of 3cm longer than its altitude. find the altitude if the area of the triangle is 44 cm?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

altitude is another name for height of a triangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and remember Area of triangle = (base * height)/2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A = (bh)/2 44 = ((h+3)h)/2 44*2 = h(h+3) 88 = h^2 + 3h h^2 + 3h - 88 = 0 Solve that for h to find the height or altitude

Thanks! if the altitude of a triangle is 4cm shorter than the base how would i set up an equation?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if the altitude of a triangle is 4cm shorter than the base then h = b-4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the altitude of a triangle is 4cm shorter than the base. find the altitude if the area of the triangle is 90cm

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

A = (bh)/2 90 = (b(b-4))/2 90*2 = b(b-4) 180 = b^2 - 4b b^2 - 4b - 180 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how will that factor

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

It doesn't, you'll have to use the quadratic formula.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you help with some other questions that i have posted?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sure

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

are they already posted?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the dimensions of a framed picture are 50 cm by 30 cm. the area of the picture itself is 444cm. find the distance from the edge of the picture to the edge of the frame if this distance is uniform around the picture?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
