3. the lines shown in the figure below are what... a. parallel b. perpendicular c. neither d. both 4. two lines are perpendicular when.. a. the product of the slopes is -1. b. the product of thier slopes is greater than 0 c. they have the same slope d. thier slopes are undefined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (aripotta):

for the first one, all you have to do is find the slopes of the lines. they LOOK parallel, but you never know for sure.

OpenStudy (aripotta):

do they have the same slopes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im guessing yes

OpenStudy (aripotta):

you can't guess :L you have to be sure by finding their slopes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay im doing it now :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

whats -2 - -8?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont have a calculator near lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

+6

OpenStudy (aripotta):

you shouldn't be doing -2 - (-8) :l

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg lol you kidding. how the heck do i find the slope then? i thought it was y2-y1 and x2-x1

OpenStudy (aripotta):

it is, but -8 and -2 are on two different lines..

OpenStudy (aripotta):

they give you 2 coordinates from each line (-2,7) (1,-2) for the first one, and (-8,5) (-5,-4) for the other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay.. i see what you mean now. brb ill figure them out

OpenStudy (aripotta):

the slope is (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, i dont have a scientific calc in my house right now, but for the first one, i got -4-5... and -5 - (-8).. and for the second one, -2 - 7 and 1- (-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i seriously cant solve them without a calc though lol

OpenStudy (aripotta):

if you break it down, it'll help. it's simple math once you do that. -4 - 5 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

no, it would be 1 if it was -4 + 5. but it's -4 - 5, so it would be -9

OpenStudy (aripotta):

-5 - (-8) = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yes :D so the slope for the first line is -9/3 or simplified, -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, and for the other one, -9/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh theyre the same lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which means theyre parallel?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay no how do i know if they are perpendicular?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i don't even why d is a choice. you can't have two lines that are parallel AND perpendicular...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol for people like me lmfao, who dont know the difference haha so its only parallel then correct?

OpenStudy (aripotta):

i guess a lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay now for the second one..

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yea, the first one is parallel . and the second one is a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome thank you so much(:

OpenStudy (aripotta):

3/5 * -5/3 = -15/15 = -1

OpenStudy (aripotta):

yep, a

OpenStudy (aripotta):

no problem :)
