In 10 months, 62.6 gallons were used. What is the unit rate? After answering, please explain how you found it

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I guess finding it would be the first step. How do you propose to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i was thinking about division then useing the sqrt

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Square root? Why? What are the units? 62.6 gal / 10 months = 6.26 gal/month

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i thought it was 6.26 for 10 months, so it would be 62.6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is because the rate would've been 6.26 for 10 months

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

It's 62.6 gal / 10 months. The "problem" is that "10" is not "1" and this is somehow unsatisfactory. 62.6 / 10 = 6.26. This gives 6.26 gal / 1 month. Now that the coefficient in the denominator is "1", we are supposed to be happier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, i understand now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thx

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Yes, but are you "happier"? :-) Nothing says happiness like "1" in the denominator! Maybe I should write Greeting Cards?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, yeah im a little happier.
