What is the purpose of ethidium bromide?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like when it is put in gel to seperate DNA.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ethidium bromide is added to a gel for the purpose of visualizing the DNA during and after electrophoresis. Ethidium bromide slides into the DNA structure, forming a complex that is visibly fluorescent under ultraviolet (UV) light. Because of its interaction with DNA, ethidium bromide is a carcinogen.
