Here's what I think. Non-metals tend to form anions. When a non-metal makes a bond with another element, it tends to gain electrons, rather than losing them. Anions are ions that have MORE electrons that protons. And so they have a NEGATIVE charge.

Yeah, I do think oxygen is the answer. Sodium and calcium are metals. Oxygen and argon are the nonmetals. But the problem with argon is that it's a noble gas. What that means is that it's not very reactive, at all. It doesn't wanna bond with anything else. So that just leaves us with oxygen, as the only non-metal that would bond. And non-metals are the ones that tend to form anions.
