The scale factor for two similar rectangles is 3. If the area of the smaller rectangle is 8 m^2, what is the area of the larger rectangle

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The "scale factor" is the number you multiply each dimension in one rectangle to get the corresponding dimension in the other rectangle So a scale factor of 3 means you're tripling each dimension. So if you're tripling each dimension, then you are multiplying the old area by 3^2 = 9 to get the new area.
