ACP Composition Assignment requires coming up with a thesis or claim to be tested from the show Modern Family and a lens from a series of other papers and articles related to marriage. Trying to understand what is meant by a lens in using various articles to support a thesis that I have to come up with about the ABC show Modern Family (English composition class). I looked at 3 episodes of the show and have articles such as TIME Is There Hope for the American Marriage?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

John Gottman, of the Gottman Institute, has profound ideas on marriage -- and its demise. Given the great demands on marriages today, when we live at a time when the extended family is quite separate and married couples live in isolated dyads with little psychological support, that any marriages last is (perhaps) a miracle. But for those that do last, bad-behavior sets in, and Gottman addresses the bad behaviors in this video and many others on YouTube. He's really smart about relationships. 1. Thanks, I will look at these. Still not sure what a lens is exactly. Not addressed by your response. From Assignment: as you introduce your first main lens, you need to put it into context. but only within the confines of what you will discuss. As you begin to switch you lens (or authors) you just need to give a brief context to that author.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

More from the assignment: Expand and explain the connection of your lens to the area of marriage and Family you are analyzing in the show. Contextualize the Main lens. I only kind of get the meaning of what is meant by lens...possibly a point of view from the article? Not knowing what is meant by lens makes this assignment hard to move forward with.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The lens refers to looking at it from a particular perspective, the ones that you are bringing in, for instance a particular author/article/ideology that is either self-chosen or instructor-chosen.

So if I am examining something using Gottman's lens, I must understand the foundation of his theory, his bottom line. Like I am putting on Gottman's glasses and seeing what I am looking at (examining) from his eyes (therefore, "lens").

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Each author will have a different "lens." And you will examine X or Y with that lens on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you put the lens of Gottman (or anyone) on and look at Modern Family, what can you decode about the program that, then, gives you a thesis, your own, but one that is informed by Gottman (or whatever theorist).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is revealed about Modern Family by looking through a particular lens that you choose?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks again...this is inline with what I was thinking and I just watched Gottman link. I think this is helping. I have to come up with my thesis from the Modern Family show which I was not familiar with and I have a dozen articles that I need to use about 3-4 to prove the thesis from different lenses. So I think my thesis needs to include a topic that is common to the two.

So one of the article deals with the compromises a wife had to make (Edelman) when her husband worked long hours that made her angry. She eventually gave up her career to care for their child and she did all the housework. She was angry mostly that her child was not getting the attention of her husband. Possibly I can find something in this show that relates to this and other topics since this will be a 4-5 page work. Rough draft needed by Tuesday. It seems that most in my class knew the show but my family and I don't watch TV we read and do other activities. I have not watched any TV in years.

Much more helpful than my teacher. I never get my questions answered and her comments on rough drafts give me no direction of what I need to improve on. Thanks for the help. This is the first time I tried this site. High School Senior

I, too, don't watch tv. I thought I was the only one. And, I, too, just discovered this site. I like it a lot. Best of everything on your paper. =]
