find the prime factors of each number and "pull out" pairs from the square root rewrite sqrt(-1) as i for example: \( \sqrt{-27} = i \sqrt{27}= i \sqrt{3\cdot 3 \cdot 3}\) pull out one pair of 3's from the square root. They become 3 outside the radical \( i \sqrt{3\cdot 3 \cdot 3}=3i\sqrt{3}\) do the same for the other term and combine them
