Consider the line y=-(6/5)x-2 Find the equation of the line that is parallel to this line and passes through the point (-5,-6) Find the equation of the line that is perpendicular to this line and passes through the point (-5,-6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug in the coordinates to the slope intercept form. remember that when it's parallel, the slope stays the same and when it's perpendicular the slope becomes opposite reciprocal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will the perpindicular slope be negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it shouldn't be. because you multiply the negative sign to 6/5 so that will be -6/5. and the perpendicular slope is going to be 5/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when do I multiply the negative sign?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-(6/5)x-2 so you see that negative before the parenthesis? that should be understood as -6/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you. so would the parallel equation be y=-6/5
