solve w /w/-9=-5

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do you mean absolute value? |w| ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok |w| - 9 = -5 First add -9 to both sides |w| - 9 + 9 = -5 + 9 |w| = 4 An absolute value equation of the form |X| = a where X is an expression and a is a number is solved by solving the two equations X = a or -X = a Here the expression is simply w, so you get to equations: w = 4 or -w = 4 Multiply the second part by -1 on both sides and you get: w = 4 or w = -4

aye bro there is no x

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

There is no x in your problem, but I was trying to give you a general rule. The general rule of solving an equation with absolute value is that if you have an expression inside the absolute value symbol equaling a number, then solve the expression equals the number OR the negative of the expression equals the number. In your case the expression was simply w.

You too, thanks
