None of these answers are very good making this a tough set of questions to tackle, but I'll do my best and see what we can come up with. 4) Footbinding was considered a fashion statement in Chinese culture -- a brutal, painful fashion statement. It was often done to try and ensure that daughters would be attractive enough to marry upwards into society, such as among the nobles who favored it. It wasn't viewed as punishment in that regard -- more like a necessity. Nor was it really used to keep slaves in check. If you didn't bind your feet, you were considered better for manual labor out in the rice fields, for example, or were actually sold into slavery (because you had good, working feet for those jobs). It wasn't a custom imported into Europe by Marco Polo, either, or was really mentioned by him in his travels. And the Qing Dynasty actually tried to abolish foot binding but with little success. Based on that, I'd go with that it was considered a status symbol in Qing society (even though the Qing/Manchu didn't agree with it, there were many other nobles that still did). Despite the Qing never adopting it, many families still practiced it in the hopes of making their daughters attractive and marriageable to the elite maintaining its popularity, even in decline, even as far as the 20th century. 6) Chinese population nearly doubled in that period and improvements were made to the food supply (crops like sweet potatoes and peanuts were brought in from European traders and adopted by the Chinese) to help it explode. Farmland was further improved through conquests expanding the empire's boundaries. I guess the right answer for this one is that growth in manufacturing and trade is what the question is looking for. It's commonly believed that China's economy stagnated because of its isolationism -- especially in trade -- though evidence elsewhere proves that this wasn't necessarily the case. Though its ports were shuttered or severely restricted to outsiders, silver from European traders flowed into the country via other trading posts in exchange for silks and teas. It's true that China fell behind in terms of industrial advancement in comparison to Europe, so I guess that's what the question is probably looking for. 3) This is the easiest one to answer, even without all of the choices. The Forbidden City was simply closed to commoners, hence its name. It was regarded as the private reserve of the emperor, his court, and all of the concubines brought in to help ensure that there would be an heir.

There was one group of Chinese who didn't practice footbinding with their daughters. If you want to know more about this, just look up the word "Hakka". A famous Hakka Chinese would be Chow Yun Fat, the guy from the Crouching Tiger movie. I'm Hakka, but I'm not famous.
