Please help! classify -6x^5+4x^3+3x^2+11 by degree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Polynomial degree is determined by the highest exponent. So here, the largest exponent on x is 5, so it is considered a polynomial of degree "5".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can also say "fifth degree".

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I got that but it wants to know if its quintic cubic quartic or quadratic and i have no idea wich one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*which

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Those are not the common terms, but it would be quintic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why? how do i know that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is no other way to associate 5th with quintic and 4th with quartic and 3rd with cubic and 2nd with quadratic other than by memorizing those terms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh ok that makes sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you help with one more?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Funny math tidbits!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure, why not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

write -2x^2(-5x^2+4x^3) in standard form.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to use the distributive property of multiplication for that. The general form is a(c + d) = ac + ad Here, we have: 10x^4 - 8x^5 but the terms are usually written descending on the exponents, so: -8x^5 + 10x^4 Notice that we multiply the coefficients but add the exponents.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thank you so much I really had no idea on how to do those

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome! And it looks like you learned something! That's good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah I did thanks to you! :)
