What is negative 8 squared?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when you square a negative number, you are multiplying two negatives together, and the product of two negatives will be a positive. So: 8 * 8 = 64 and: (-8) * (-8) = 64

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes: positive * positive = positive negative * negative = positive positive * negative = negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So any number you square will always give you a positive result.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Except positive times negative right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, but then that wouldn't be squaring... squaring means multiplying a number by itself. So if you square a negative, like -8, it's a negative times a negative, giving positive 64. If you square a positive, like 8, it's a positive times a positive, giving positive 64.

Oh, thanks :)
