Is it correct/possible to use the chain rule to find the derivative of a constant times a binomial of degree 1. Example: dy/dx of 35x(x+10)
I see that following the standard chain rule this leads to a different result than if I were to factor out the problem and then differentiate. Is the chain rule only valid for binomials/polynomials of degree > 1?

This isn't chain rule, it's product rule. You can either do product rule with f=35x and g=x+10 or you can expand and use power rule with 35x^2+350x
