can someone explain to me how to solve this problem...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Write the equation of the line that is perpendicular to the line 3x + y = 7 and passes through the point (6, −1).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get the equation of a line, you'll need the slope of the line and a point that is on that line so you can write it in point-slope form.... since it has to be perpendicular to 3x+y=7, do you know how to get the slope that is perpendicular to this line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think u the slope is the reciprocal of the slope in the equation,,right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, it's the negative reciprocal....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is the slope of the line with equation 3x+y=7 ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1/3?
