Which of the following is a solution of the compound inequality? 3x + 8 < 2 or x + 12 > 2 - x x < -2 or x > 5 x < -6 and x > 5 All real numbers No solution is it the first one?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Solve each side. Start with the left side: 3x + 8 < 2 What's the next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 8 from each side

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

I thought EmmaH asked the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got x>-2 and x>-10-x so i figures it was the first one...

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Do the second part again. x + 12 > 2 - x

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Add x to both sides 2x + 12 > 2 Subtract 12 from both sides 2x > -10 x > -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so it is the first one:)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The solution to both sides is x < -2 or x > -5 Try plotting that on a number line.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The first one has x > 5. We get x > -5, so it's not the first one.
