Finding the measure of square's angles -- HELP PLEASE!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Since DH = HF, substitute what DH and HF are equal to, you get: x + 1 = 3y Since GH = HE, and you know what GH and HE are equal to, then: 3x - 4 = 5y + 1 Now you have two equations in x and y. Solve the system of equations to get x and y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you solce the system??

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Ok, let's start with the 2 equations: x + 1 = 3y 3x - 4 = 5y + 1 Let's first get all x's and y's on left side and numbers on right side for both equations.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

x - 3y = -1 3x - 5y = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok... But you can't solve it with x and y in the same thing.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Now multiply the entire first equation by -3, then write the original second eq below -3x + 9y = 3 3x - 5y = 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh??

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Are you familiar with systems of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhh... no

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

To get x and y, you must set up a system of equations and solve it. If you haven't learned how to solve a system of equations, you can't solve thi problem.
