When trying to find all possible outcomes, do you just multiply all of the numbers by each other?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Example: Assembling an outfit from 6 shirts, 4 pairs of pants, and 2 pairs of shoes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for this example yes, but not always

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why is it, that in this problem, you just multiply and others you don't? Can you give me an example? Hope its not too much trouble

OpenStudy (anonymous):

say you have to make four letter with the letters A,B,C,D and E. In this one you multiply 5*4*3*2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there aren't really distinct sets of items you can multiply together
