Look at it this way: a subordinate clause is the same thing as a dependent clause... So the independent clause is the clause that can stand on it's own.... But when something depends on the other it needs the thing it depends on... so dependent clauses depend on the clause that can stand alone (independent).... Does that help at all?

Another way to tell is that subordinate clauses usually begin with words like because, while, if, since, etc.
