A line has a slope of 3. One of the points on the line is (2, -3). Another point is (5, P) Find P. Please don't just give the answer please explain how to do it! Thank you!
So taking the points that you already have, (2, -3) and (5, P) you can find the x. You would do 2 - 5 which is -3. So now you have -3 on the bottom. So since the slope is positive 3, the y will be a negative because a negative divided by a negative is a positive. So, how can you get the slope of 3 using -3? Well, what can be divided by -3 to get positive 3? The answer is -9. So going back to y1-y2 over x1-x2 (or it could be y2-y1 over x2-x1) you would need to take -3 and subtract P from it. How much do you need to subtract from -3 to get -9? The answer is 6. So P=6.
Thank you so much!
