what is the length of segment BC in the right triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a^2+b^2=c^2

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

use the pythagpras theorem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well can you tell me how??

OpenStudy (blacksteel):

The Pythagorean Theorem tells us that given a triangle with legs of lengths a and b and hypotenuse of length c: |dw:1354665697371:dw| a^2 + b^2 = c^2 So in your triangle, lets let a = 15 and b = 36. (You can also let a = 36 and b = 15, it doesn't matter). Then 15^2 + 36^2 = 225 + 1296 = 1521 = c^2 So c = sqrt(1521) = 39
